A forecast of sixty percent chance of precipitation seemed to indicate that the S AM CUP 2011 on Saturday, the 17th of September 2011, was ill-fated from the start; however, despite the prediction nineteen teams of employees from different architectural, engineering and architectural publishing firms were able to prove their soccer skills accompanied by sunny weather and only an occasional refreshing shower. The Landhof, former home stadium of the FC Basel and venue of the first international soccer match between the national German and Swiss teams in 1908, afforded an ideal backdrop. After a short greeting and whistle by Samuel Schultze, President of the S AM Foundation Board, the tournament began, whose overall soccer level was first-class. The commentary of reporter Thierry Gerber from Radio X contributed to the suspense and provided an overview of the action on four fields. Eight teams qualified for the quarter final. The engineering firms Schnetzer Puskas and Lüchinger + Meyer shared third place with equal points. In a nerve-racking final Lausanne+ opposed Quart Verlag. Finally Lausanne+ was the winner after a successful penalty goal. After the honors has been awarded, Sandra Luzia Schafroth (Managing Director of S AM) and Hubertus Adam (Artistic Director of S AM) launched the relaxed part of the evening with grilling and music. Many teams contributed to the fantastic show on Saturday, not only through their sports engagement but also optically with their self-designed team uniforms.
23 OCTOBER 2011 - 22 JANUARY 2012
Extended to Monday, 09 April 2012
The emergence and development of the State of Israel represents a unique project in the history of Modernism. This not only pertains to the unparalleled scale and speed of development – Israel’s population has doubled ten times in the span of 50 years. Also exceptional are the ideological roots (a mixture of utopian, socialist, Biblical and Oriental concepts); the circumstances of the realization (protection of certain ethic/cultural groups left others to become refugees); and finally also the preference for architectural experiments: Israel became a laboratory of architecture after the Second World War, in particular for Structuralismus and Brutalism.
The development of the State of Israel is commonly believed to have been strongly shaped by improvisation, solutions born of necessity and speculative initiative. The exhibition The Israeli Project 2011 proves, however, that Israel entailed one of the most efficient and comprehensive architectural projects of Modernism – an experiment involving the construction of an artificial landscape as well as the building of dozens of new cities and hundreds of new rural settlements.
