Portrait of a Landscape

Opening: 06/07/2018, 7PM

Pierre-Philippe Hofmann is a visual artist from Brussels with Swiss roots. Over the course of four years, in all seasons, he crossed Switzerland on foot ten times – from the outermost borders to the geographical centre: Älggi Alp in the canton Obwalden. Along the way, Hofmann captured countless still images, thus producing a gigantic panorama of the country. Here, the ordinary and the banal appear together with the extraordinary – resulting in a different, more critical image of Switzerland. This video installation, which runs on dozens of screens, makes it possible to perceive Switzerland in an unfamiliar way.
"Portrait of a Landscape" represents a continuation of the engagement with Switzerland that S AM commenced in 2016 with the exhibition "Schweizweit". After the architectural portrait of Switzerland conveyed by that exhibition, "Portrait of a Landscape" now continues research into Switzerland, this time with artistic means, revealing a territorial portrait of Switzerland via systematic investigation. This comprehensive landscape cartography encompasses peculiarities, beauties and ways of working, while also raising key questions on subjects such as urban sprawl, urbanisation and societal developments in the respective areas.
This exhibition invites its visitors to reassess fixed expectations and to open up to a reality that includes contradictions, which are often precisely what make it appealing.
