The publication ‘Napoli Super Modern’, released in October 2020, is available in the S AM museum shop during the exhibition. ‘Napoli Super Modern’ received a gold medal at the 2021/22 German Photo Book Awards in the category ‘documentary/journalistic photo book’. At the 2021 DAM Architectural Book Awards, it was named one of the ten best architecture books in that year’s competition. This image-rich book is a tribute to modern urban development in Naples. It contains around fifty photos by renowned French photographer Cyrille Weiner, as well as historical images, illustrations of important architectural details, and an atlas featuring eighteen significant buildings from 1930 to 1960, presented by means of site plans, floor plans, elevations and sections. The publication shows how, in this southern Italian metropolis, a distinct form of modernism has developed, which has managed to combine Mediterranean culture with local materials and a strong international spirit. The thematic essays and concise descriptions of the documented buildings, in conjunction with the ample illustrations, provide an attractive and lively portrait of Naples. Although the city is both famous and infamous, its qualities and individuality regarding architecture and urban development have rarely been presented internationally until now.
With contributions from Gianluigi Freda, Andrea Maglio, Umberto Napolitano and Manuel Orazi.
