10/10 Denk Mal Bar: Hypokras with Martina + Jonas (M.A. Preservation and Monument Management)
5 - 8.30 PM
The 'denk mal bar' creates a space to discuss the heritage conservation of tomorrow over a cool drink - because heritage conservation is and always has been a matter of negotiation. The bar becomes a discursive sculpture, its base is filled with literature that can be quickly picked up during lively discussions. This use echoes the former Kunsthalle Bar, which operated in the same space for two decades from 1984.
On selected Thursday evenings, experts from the fields of architecture and heritage conservation invite you to their signature drinks and informal discussions on the future of heritage conservation.
Why the Warteck?
The Warteck site is home to an industrial heritage landmark that holds great significance and emotional resonance for the city of Basel. Its long-term preservation was made possible in part thanks to the commitment of Roger Diener. This project not only connects back to the bar at S AM (also a Diener project), but it also reflects our core belief that building culture includes transformation, reinterpretation, and even decommissioning of structures.
Why Hypocras?
This spiced wine is a piece of Basel’s cultural heritage! According to Wikipedia: The Hypocras popular in Basel is made from a blend of red and white wines, sugar, lemon zest, and spices such as ginger, green cardamom, coriander, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. The drink was first mentioned in the Middle Ages; in 1523, the Grand Council of Basel officially permitted its trade. Traditionally, Hypocras is enjoyed in the hour before and after the turn of the year, usually accompanied by Basler Läckerli.
The custom of drinking Hypocras on New Year’s Day was revived in public space in 1996 by the Guild of the Golden Star (Zunft zum Goldenen Sternen). Each year, the guild invites the public to the Neijoorsaadringgede, where Hypocras is served directly from the taps of the Dreizack Fountain on Münsterberg. The tradition is also upheld in many long-established Basel families.
