Urban space, sound, silence – 3 × 4′33″

12.15–12.45 PM

mimiko (Wednesday lunchtime concert) with the percussionists Fabio Da Silva, Mikołaj Rytowski, Zacarias Maia and Pedro Tavares: ‘Urban space, sound, silence – 3 × 4′33″’

The performance ‘Urban Space, Sound, Silence – 3 x 4’33’’, a special edition of the concert series ‘mimiko’ featuring the percussionists Fabio Da Silva, Mikołaj Rytowski, Zacarias Maia and Pedro Tavares, begins in the Offene Kirche Elisabethen and continues from there into the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum. This performance is part of the public programme of the exhibition ‘Under the Radar’ at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum and was developed in cooperation with mimiko and the Basel Academy of Music (Prof. Christian Dierstein). It references the composition ‘4’33’’’ by the American composer and pianist John Cage (1912-1992): a work in which (apparent) silence takes centre stage. ‘4’33’’’ is not about a complete absence of sound, but rather the ambient noises that one hears while taking part in the performance. This piece, with which Cage explored the limits of what music could be, allows for reflection on the concepts of silence and music. The architects featured in the exhibition ‘Under the Radar’ take a similar approach. Their work is not just limited to designing and putting up buildings; they also investigate the site in which they intervene, make observations, ask questions and thus broaden the understanding of architecture. Their research allows for reflection on the concepts of territory and architecture.
